물 위로
길이 드러난 오후An afternoon

바다 한가운데로
사람들이 걸어가고 있었다.
People were walking
out into the middle of the sea.
2011년 9월 14일 오후, 서해의 한 항구. 방파제에 오르자 바다 건너 작은 섬 옆에 풍력발전기 세 기가 서 있었다. 그 오른쪽으로는 물 위에 가늘게 드러난 길이 있었고, 사람들이 그 길을 따라 한 줄로 걸어가고 있었다. 우리는 방파제 위에서 바다 쪽을 보며 사진을 찍었다.
On the afternoon of 14 September 2011, at a harbour on the west coast. Up on the seawall, three wind turbines stood beside a small island across the water. To their right a thin path showed above the sea, and people were walking along it in single file. We stayed on the seawall, taking pictures facing the sea.
바위 너머로 섬이 이어지는 바다A sea where islands run on past the rocks
방파제 아래로는 큰 바위가 물가까지 쌓여 있고, 그 바위 위에서 몇몇 사람이 낚싯대를 드리우고 있었다. 수평선을 따라 낮은 섬들이 이어지고, 멀리 배들이 떠 있었다.
Below the seawall, large rocks were piled down to the water, and a few people were fishing from them. Low islands ran along the horizon, with boats far out beyond.
번갈아 앉아 본 자리Taking turns on the same ledge
방파제 가장자리, 바위가 시작되는 턱에 번갈아 앉았다. 바다를 등지고 앉아 돌아보면 그 뒤로 물 위의 길과 걸어가는 사람들이 함께 들어온다. 자리를 바꿔 다른 한 사람도 바위 쪽에 앉았다.
We took turns sitting on the edge of the seawall, right where the rocks begin. Sit with your back to the sea and look round, and the path on the water and the people walking it come into the frame behind you. Then we swapped, and the other one sat by the rocks.
그 사이 선글라스를 쓴 채 얼굴을 맞대고 한 장을 찍었다.
In between, we took one cheek to cheek, sunglasses on.
신발을 벗고 잠깐Shoes off for a while
오후 4시 무렵에는 잔디 언덕 앞 벤치에 나란히 앉았다. 둘 다 신발을 벗어 발밑에 두었다. 이날의 마지막 사진은 이 벤치에서 찍었다.
Around four we sat side by side on a bench in front of a grassy bank. We both took our shoes off and left them at our feet. The day’s last pictures were taken on this bench.
