Busan,
where we stood
Before sand sculptures, inside an aquarium window.
The photographs of the sea have us in them, too.

From Haeundae to Dongbaekseom, then an evening at Gwangalli. We walked through Busan in June 2011, photographing the sea and ourselves beside it.
A day framed by sand
Large sand sculptures stood on Haeundae Beach. We posed side by side, then leaned in for another photograph by a beachside mural. A wide frame keeps the scale of the festival; a close one keeps us in it.
That year’s Haeundae Sand Festival ran from 3 to 6 June. Our first evening fell right in the middle.

Inside a window of water
From beach sand to the blue of the tanks. At Busan Aquarium we fitted into a round window and held up two V-signs. With both the water and ourselves in the frame, it became a place we occupied, not just one we looked at.

Following the coast in the morning
The next morning we stood on the coastal path around Dongbaekseom. Haeundae’s buildings were faint across the water. We walked the deck, sat on a bench and took a photograph together beside the railing.

In front of the bridge lights
At Gwangalli, Gwangan Bridge becomes the beach’s backdrop. Blue lingered in the sky after sunset, while the bridge lights stretched over the water. From the shore, we tried different frames facing the bridge.
