A tower by the river,
shade on the island
Saturday 12 May 2012. We spent the early afternoon at the wharf on the Bukhangang River in Gapyeong, under the zip-wire tower whose lines run out towards Nami Island. On the island we walked for a long time along dirt paths lined with tall trees.

Beside the Gapyeong wharf, where boats leave for Nami Island, stood a tall steel zip-wire tower. Above its entrance a big Zip-wire sign carried the words “Jara–Nami Skyline”, and a banner beside it listed the fare towards Nami Island. Inside, a large banner showed riders hanging from the line on their way down. We took one picture standing in front of it and a selfie by the information boards. Out at the end of the pier there were low hills across the river, with thin lines running above the water.

Two selfies from the wharf. At 2:18 we put our faces together with the river behind us; in the one taken two minutes later, our hair is standing every which way. Same place, two very different pictures.

Dirt paths lined with trees
From about three o’clock we were on the island. Wide dirt paths lined on both sides by tall, straight trees branched off in several directions, and people strolled slowly in the shade. Beyond the lawns there were groups sitting together. We walked those paths side by side, at one point with an arm around a shoulder.

At 4:19 one of us stood with a hand on a thick trunk for a photograph. The bark was a reddish brown, split into long vertical strips, and behind it stood a small pavilion with a thatched roof.

An afternoon that began under a tower at the wharf and ended walking in the shade of the island’s trees.
