A hand rising from the sea,
a road running north
Tuesday, 7 August 2012, the third day of a four-day summer holiday. The night before, we had stood on a beach in Pohang looking at lights across the water. This morning, at Homigot, we came face to face with a giant hand rising out of the sea. From there we kept the East Sea on our right and headed north: rocks below a coastal village, a beach in the afternoon, a sunset over the national road, and at night the harbour of Imwon in Samcheok, Gangwon.

Two hands facing each other
At 10:47 a.m., passing Guryongpo, we looked down from a roadside slope at a beach crowded with parasols. About ten minutes further on we reached Homigot Sunrise Square.
On the square a huge bronze hand rose from a checkered floor, and beyond its palm stood the ring-shaped New Millennium Memorial Hall. This sculpture, the Hands of Harmony (Sangsaeng-ui Son), is not one hand but two: a left hand on land and a right hand in the sea, facing each other.

Down by the water, the right hand rises from the sea. Birds were perched on its fingertips. Standing on the seawall, the hand is right behind you. We took turns, and in the end stood there side by side.

Rocks below a bus stop
A little way from Homigot, on a coastal road curving around the foot of the hills, we pulled over. The bus stop sign by the road read “Daedongbae 2-ri”. Below the road lay a jade-green sea scattered with dark rocks.

Crab legs, sand, a yellow ring
At 1:42 p.m., lunch was a plate piled with split crab legs. In the afternoon we went into the water at a beach in Yeongdeok. Waves rolled in white towards a stretch of sand with a single blue parasol.
At one point a foot was buried in the sand with only the toes showing. Next to a yellow swim ring lay the same red checked mat we had spread in the valley the day before.

Sunset over the national road
At 6:52 p.m., on National Route 7, the sun was going down behind the hills on our left. Crossing the fields of Yeonghae, thin clouds lay above a rounded peak. At 7:07, near Byeonggok, the road ran beside the sea again, and every cloud above the horizon was pink.

A harbour of basins at night
Long after the sun had gone we kept driving north, reaching Imwon Harbour in Wondeok-eup, Samcheok, around eight. In front of every raw-fish shop stood rows of colourful rubber basins. Dinner was a plate of sliced raw fish.

In the morning we stood with our backs to a hand rising from the sea; in the evening we drove under pink clouds. In one day we followed the East Sea from North Gyeongsang up into Gangwon. The next day went on to a window on Anmok Beach and a stream below Chiaksan.
