The sea behind the glass:
our last day in Jeju
26 July 2013, our last day in Jeju. Past the blue of Aqua Planet and a late lunch in Onpyeong-ri, our five days ended at a plane window after dark.

One picture on the last morning
Hamdeok on our last morning. In that brightness, the end of five days still felt a little distant.
The night before, on the shore at Hamdeok, is in Nine at night, Hamdeok under the lights.
Rays passing overhead
Aqua Planet Jeju, beside Seopjikoji-ro on the east of the island. Past a tank where silver fish circled in shoals among the coral, a tunnel opened up with water above our heads. Through the glass ceiling a shoal of small silver fish swirled as one mass, and rays slid by directly overhead, showing their white undersides.

An entire wall was glass, and everyone in front of it became a black silhouette. In the water a single diver hung among the shoals, and a ray patterned with white spots spread its wings and passed slowly by.

A small souvenir for the return. The end of a trip stays, in part, in little things like this.

Honjeo opseoye’: a seaside restaurant
Lunch was late, after three. Jjong-ine Haesanmul, by the coast road in Onpyeong-ri. Below the sign, the window said ‘Honjeo opseoye’ — welcome, in Jeju dialect. The menu on the wall listed things like top-shell soup, sea-urchin seaweed soup, sea-urchin bibimbap and grilled mackerel; on our table came bibimbap, a soup with seaweed and several plates of side dishes.
Along Hwanhaejangseong-ro in front of the restaurant ran a low stone wall. Across the road, beyond it, were black rocks, stone sculptures and the sea under a pale sky.

And at half past ten at night, at an aeroplane window. Beyond the engine cowling, lights below ran on in thin lines.

A day of looking through glass ended at a small aeroplane window.
