2011년 9월 4일, 늦은 오후의 일산호수공원. 하늘은 구름으로 가득했고 해는 그 뒤에 숨어 있었다. 호수 가장자리 갈대가 자라는 물가에서 우리는 번갈아 하늘을 등지고 섰다. 얼굴은 어둡게 지고, 팔과 어깨의 윤곽이 구름 위로 또렷하게 남았다.
Ilsan Lake Park, late afternoon on 4 September 2011. The sky was full of cloud with the sun somewhere behind it. At the water’s edge, where reeds grow along the lake, we took turns standing with our backs to the sky. Faces fell into shadow; arms and shoulders stayed sharp against the clouds.
하늘이 절반인 사진Pictures that are half sky
카메라를 낮추면 갈대와 수면은 화면 아래로 가라앉고, 구름 낀 하늘이 위를 채운다. 그 앞에서 한 사람은 팔을 올리고, 한 사람은 고개를 숙였다. 같은 자리에서 몇 번이고 자세를 바꿨다.
Lower the camera and the reeds and water sink to the bottom of the frame while the clouded sky fills the top. One of us raised an arm; the other looked down. We kept changing poses in the same spot.
큰 나무와 버드나무 사이Between the big tree and the willows
갈대밭을 지나면 잔디가 넓어지고, 물가를 따라 키 큰 나무들이 서 있다. 한 그루 큰 나무 아래 그늘에는 사람들이 앉아 쉬고 있었고, 버드나무가 늘어진 물길 옆 난간에서 잠시 물을 내려다봤다. 언덕 위에는 정자가 하나 서 있었다.
Past the reeds the lawn opens out, with tall trees along the water. People sat resting in the shade of one big tree, and by a stream hung with willows we stopped at the rail to look down at the water. A pavilion stood on a rise above.
호수를 따라 휘어지는 길A path that bends with the lake
호수 둘레의 산책길은 완만하게 휘어진다. 앞서 걷던 사람이 뒤를 돌아보고, 뒤에 있던 사람이 걸어온다. 길 끝 호수 건너편에는 건물들과 높은 첨탑이 보였다. 물가 난간 앞에서 마지막으로 얼굴을 맞대고 한 장을 찍었다.
The path around the lake curves gently. The one in front turns to look back; the one behind walks up. Across the water at the end of the path stood buildings and a tall spire. At the railing by the water we took one last picture, cheek to cheek.
구름 사이로 파란 하늘이 조금씩 비치기 시작했다. 물 건너편 잔디 언덕에도 사람들이 앉아 있었다.
Patches of blue began to show between the clouds. People were sitting on the grassy bank across the water too.
강 건너 불이 켜질 때When the lights came on across the river
저녁 7시가 넘어 차로 돌아오는 길, 하늘은 보랏빛으로 가라앉았고 강 건너 도시에 하나둘 불이 들어왔다. 호숫가의 구름 하늘에서 시작한 하루가 그렇게 끝났다.
Driving back after seven, the sky settled into violet and lights came on one by one in the city across the river. A day that began under a clouded sky by the lake ended there.
