Wind at Batgae,
an afternoon on the breakwater
Our second day on Anmyeondo began at Batgae Beach, not far from the deck where the first day ended at the coals. At around half past eleven we took turns walking across the wide sand while the wind dragged our hair to one side, photographing each other. Lunch was a seafood stew bubbling at a restaurant on Bangpo-ro in Anmyeon-eup, and after two, once we were off the island, we stopped at a stone breakwater near Dangam-ri in Nam-myeon.
The wind got there first
A thin film of water still lay on the sand and the sky showed in it. One of us would stand facing the sea while the other held the camera. The wind was strong: long hair kept blowing across a face and had to be held down by hand, and even short hair stood up from the crown.

At 11:29, in a selfie with both of us in it, one grinned widely and the other shaded her eyes with her palm.
Onto the dry sand
About ten minutes later we had moved a little south along the beach, where the sand was dry and yellow. The figure walking ahead grew smaller towards the headland at the end of the beach, came close again within thirty seconds, and in the last frame looked back over her shoulder.

A hermit crab, then a pot of seafood
At 11:46, in the shallow water over the sand, we found a hermit crab. Lifted between fingertips it put its legs out of the shell; after a picture it went back down onto the wet sand.
Lunch was at a restaurant on Bangpo-ro in Anmyeon-eup. On a portable burner, a pot of seafood stew topped with prawns, crab, enoki mushrooms and spring onion came to the boil.

Among the fishing rods
At 2:17 p.m., off the island now, we stood by the sea near Dangam-ri in Nam-myeon. All along the breakwater of piled stone people had their lines in the water, and tents were pitched among them. The sky was clearer than in the morning, and a small boat crossed the water.

At 2:20, in the last selfie, wind-blown hair still lay across both our faces.
After a first day that ran from the Seohae Bridge to the coals, our two days on Anmyeondo ended on a windy beach and a breakwater.
