물든 길을 걷고,
잔디에 앉다Down the turning path,
then onto the grass
10월 셋째 토요일 오후, 흐린 하늘 아래 분당 중앙공원에 갔다. 공원을 가로지르는 분당천 옆 길에는 나무마다 노랗고 붉은 잎이 들기 시작했고, 길 위에도 먼저 떨어진 잎이 깔려 있었다. 3시 20분쯤 그 길을 걸었고, 3시 40분대에는 공원 안 야외공연장 앞 잔디밭에 친구들과 자리를 폈다.
On the third Saturday afternoon of October, under a grey sky, we went to Bundang Central Park. Along the path beside Bundangcheon, the stream that runs through the park, the trees were starting to turn yellow and red, and the first fallen leaves already lay on the ground. We walked that path at around twenty past three, and by a quarter to four we had spread a mat with friends on the lawn in front of the park’s open-air stage.

길은 물길을 따라 완만하게 휘어 있었다. 낮은 돌 턱 아래로는 초록빛 자전거길이 나란히 이어졌고, 그 너머 풀숲 쪽으로 분당천이 흐른다. 어떤 나무는 붉게, 어떤 나무는 노랗게 물들었고, 아직 초록인 나무도 섞여 있었다.
The path curved gently with the stream. Below a low stone kerb a green cycle lane ran alongside, and beyond the tall grass Bundangcheon flows. Some trees had turned red, some yellow, and some were still green.
걷다가 멈춰 같은 나무를 몇 번 찍었다. 잎이 반쯤 떨어진 가지 사이로 흐린 하늘이 비쳤다.
We stopped now and then to photograph the same tree more than once. Through branches already half bare, the grey sky showed.
붉게 든 나무 너머로는 공원 밖 아파트가 보였다. 도시 한가운데의 공원이라, 단풍 바로 뒤에 동네가 있었다.
Beyond the reddened trees, apartment blocks outside the park came into view. It is a park in the middle of a town, and the neighbourhood stood right behind the autumn colour.
길 위에서 한 장One frame on the path
10분쯤 더 걸은 길에서 한 사람이 카메라 앞에 섰다. 손에는 휴대전화와 벗어 든 겉옷. 뒤로는 아직 초록이 많은 나무들이 길을 따라 이어졌다.
About ten minutes further along, one of us stood for the camera, phone in hand and a jacket taken off and carried. Behind him, trees still mostly green continued along the path.
야외공연장 앞 잔디The lawn before the stage
공원 안 야외공연장에는 흰 막 지붕을 얹은 무대 앞으로 잔디가 넓게 열려 있다. 그날 잔디에는 사람들이 띄엄띄엄 앉아 있었다.
Inside the park, the open-air stage sits under a white membrane roof, with a wide lawn opening out in front of it. That afternoon people were sitting here and there across the grass.
우리도 친구들과 그 잔디에 자리를 폈다. 운동화를 벗어 옆에 두고, 둘이 나란히 앉아 사진을 찍었다.
We spread a mat there with friends. Shoes off and set to one side, the two of us sat side by side for a photograph.
뒤로는 낮은 언덕과 울타리, 벤치가 이어졌다. 같은 자리에서 조금 더 가까이 찍은 사진에서는 둘 다 웃고 있었다.
Behind us ran a low bank, a fence and a line of benches. In a closer frame taken from the same spot, we were both smiling.
흔들린 마지막 장The last frame, blurred
5시 8분의 사진은 흔들려 있었다. 체크 셔츠 차림이 큰 걸음으로 뛰어 지나가는 순간이었다.
The photograph from 5:08 is blurred: the moment a figure in a checked shirt bounded past.
물든 길은 걷기에, 넓은 잔디는 앉아 있기에 좋았다.
The turning path was for walking; the wide lawn was for sitting.
