자정 무렵의 모래Gyeongpo: sand, close to midnight
2012년 7월 11일 수요일 밤, 강릉 경포해변. 조명이 비추는 모래 위에 둘의 그림자가 길게 누운 사진에서 시작해, 자정을 1분 넘겨 소나무 옆 데크 길에서 끝나는 50분.
Wednesday night, 11 July 2012, Gyeongpo Beach in Gangneung. Fifty minutes that begin with our two shadows stretched long across floodlit sand and end a minute past midnight on a boardwalk beside the pines.
조명 아래, 두 그림자Two shadows under the floodlights
해변을 비추는 조명이 등 뒤에 있었다. 물결 모양으로 패인 모래 위로 두 사람의 그림자가 바다 쪽을 향해 길게 뻗었다. 둘이 머리 위로 팔을 모으자 그림자 끝에 하트가 생겼다.
이날 밤의 첫 사진들이다. 사람 대신 그림자를 먼저 찍었다.
The beach floodlights were behind us. Across sand rippled into small waves, our two shadows reached long toward the sea. When we joined our arms above our heads, a heart appeared at the end of them.
These are the first pictures of the night: the shadows before the people.
한 사람씩, 바다를 등지고One at a time, the sea behind
한 사람이 파도 앞 모래에 서면 다른 사람이 찍었다. 줄무늬 카디건을 걸친 사람은 두 손을 머리 뒤로 올렸고, 흰 티셔츠를 입은 사람은 두 팔을 활짝 벌렸다. 조명 때문에 서 있는 사람마다 그림자가 모래 위로 길게 누웠다.
One of us stood on the sand in front of the waves while the other took the picture. In a striped cardigan, hands went up behind the head; in a white T-shirt, both arms opened wide. In the floodlights, each of us cast a long shadow over the sand.
그리고 둘이 나란히 얼굴을 붙이고 휴대폰을 들었다. 조명을 받은 하늘이 사진 속에서 붉은 갈색으로 남았다. 11시 17분부터 20분까지, 둘이 함께 찍은 셀카가 스무 장 넘게 이어졌다.
Then we put our faces side by side and held up the phone. Lit from below, the sky came out a reddish brown. From 11:17 to 11:20 there are more than twenty selfies of the two of us in a row.
물가의 불빛, 모래의 곡선Lights on the shore, curves in the sand
해변 끝 건물들의 불빛이 밤공기에 뿌옇게 번졌다. 모래에는 바퀴 자국이 두 줄로 길게 나 있었다. 물가의 젖은 모래에는 커다란 곡선이 몇 겹 그려졌고, 한 사람이 그 선 위를 걸었다. 조명이 닿는 자리에서는 밀려온 파도가 하얗게 빛났다.
At the far end of the beach the lights of the buildings blurred into the night air. Two long tyre tracks ran through the sand. In the wet sand at the water’s edge, big curves were drawn several rings deep, and one of us walked along the line. Where the floodlights reached, the incoming waves shone white.
파도 앞에 맨발로Barefoot before the waves
파도 앞에 둘이 나란히 섰다. 신발은 벗은 채였고, 등 뒤로 파도가 하얗게 부서지고 있었다. 한 사람이 다른 사람의 어깨에 팔을 둘렀다.
We stood side by side in front of the waves. Shoes off, waves breaking white behind us, one arm around the other’s shoulders.
소나무 옆 길The path beside the pines
자정 가까이에는 모래사장 뒤편, 소나무가 줄지어 선 길에 있었다. 해변 끝 조명이 밤공기에 번져 하늘이 우유빛으로 밝았고, 소나무는 그 앞에서 검은 실루엣이 됐다. 이번에도 한 사람씩 길 가운데에 섰다.
Close to midnight we were on the path lined with pines behind the beach. The light from the end of the beach had spread through the air until the sky glowed milky, and the pines stood against it in black silhouette. Again, we took turns standing in the middle of the path.
줄무늬 카디건의 모자를 눌러쓰고, 소나무 가지 아래에서 마지막 셀카. 날짜가 바뀌어 있었다.
The striped cardigan’s hood pulled up, one last selfie under the pine branches. The date had already changed.
