벤치에서
터널 끝까지Heyri: from a long bench to the end of the tunnel
2012년 7월 1일 일요일, 흐린 한낮. 파주 헤이리 예술마을을 걸었다. 노출 콘크리트 벽과 유리벽 앞의 긴 나무 벤치에 번갈아 앉았고, 철제 고리가 겹겹이 이어진 터널을 끝까지 걸어 나갔다.
Sunday 1 July 2012, an overcast midday. We walked through Heyri Art Valley in Paju, took turns sitting on long wooden benches against bare concrete and glass, and walked a tunnel of overlapping steel rings all the way to the other end.

긴 벤치, 두 개의 벽A long bench, two walls
유리벽 너머로 책장과 이젤이 들여다보이는 건물 앞, 나무 데크 위에 긴 벤치가 놓여 있었다. 같은 벤치가 모퉁이를 돌아 거푸집 구멍이 점점이 남은 노출 콘크리트 벽 앞까지 이어졌다.
둘 다 남색 옷이었다. 한 사람이 앉으면 다른 사람이 찍었다. 같은 벤치에 번갈아 앉은 사진이 1~2분 사이에 여러 장 남았다.
In front of a building where shelves of books and easels showed through the glass, a long bench sat on a wooden deck. The same bench ran round the corner to a wall of bare concrete, dotted with the round holes left by the formwork.
We were both in navy. One of us sat while the other took the picture; within a minute or two there were several shots of each of us, taking turns on the same bench.
그리고 한 사람이 다른 사람의 어깨에 팔을 두르고, 둘이 얼굴을 맞대고 셀카를 찍었다.
Then, one arm around the other’s shoulders, we put our faces together for a selfie.
콘크리트와 나무, 떠 있는 방Concrete, wood, a room in the air
몇 걸음마다 벽의 재료와 모양이 바뀌었다. 콘크리트 벽으로 둘러싼 작은 마당에는 나무 한 그루가 비스듬히 자랐고, 가까이에는 나무판을 두른 위층이 아래층 밖으로 길게 튀어나온 건물이 서 있었다. 그 아래 테라스에는 파라솔이 펼쳐져 있었다.
Every few steps the walls changed material and shape. A small courtyard closed in by concrete held one slanting tree; nearby, a building’s timber-clad upper floor jutted far out over the storey below, parasols open on the terrace underneath.
고리 터널을 지나Through the ring tunnel
철제 고리를 비스듬히 엇갈려 겹치고 그 위를 철망으로 덮은 터널이 나무 데크 길을 감싸고 있었다. 바닥에는 작은 조명이 박혀 있었다. 한 사람이 먼저 걸어가 끝에 서고, 다른 사람이 뒤따라 걸으며 찍었다.
터널을 빠져나가면 데크 길이 침엽수 사이로 이어졌다. 고리 하나를 지날 때마다 끝의 초록이 조금씩 커졌다.
Steel rings, set at a slant and crossing over one another, roofed with mesh, wrapped around a wooden boardwalk with small lights set into the deck. One of us walked ahead to stand at the far end; the other followed, taking pictures along the way.
Out of the tunnel, the boardwalk carried on between conifers. With each ring passed, the green at the end grew a little larger.
유리창 속 초록 개구리A green frog behind the glass
2분 뒤에는 유리창 안의 커다란 초록 개구리 조형물 앞에 섰다. 눈이 동그랗게 튀어나온 개구리 아래로 노랗고 분홍빛인 글자 조형이 놓여 있었다.
Two minutes later we stopped in front of a big green frog behind a shop window, its round eyes bulging, with yellow and pink letters set out below it.
벤치에 번갈아 앉고, 고리 터널을 끝까지 걷고, 흐린 하늘 아래 언덕을 바라본 일요일 한낮.
