발밑이 보이는 아침Cloud on the ridges,

8월 셋째 토요일, 모임 사람들과 함께 강원도 인제로 1박 2일을 다녀왔다. 저녁에는 산허리마다 구름이 걸린 내린천 물가에 섰고, 이튿날 아침에는 같은 물가로 다시 내려가 바닥 돌이 비치는 초록 물에 들어가 섰다.
On the third Saturday of August we went to Inje, in Gangwon Province, for a night away with a group of friends. In the evening we stood by the Naerincheon with cloud caught on every ridge; the next morning we went back down to the same water and waded in, the green so clear you could see the stones on the bottom.

구름 걸린 산Cloud on the ridges
오후 다섯 시쯤에는 이미 인제 상남면 미산리에 와 있었다. 저녁 6시 25분, 자갈이 깔린 주차장에서 얼굴을 맞대고 사진을 찍었다. 뒤로는 초록 산등성이마다 흰 구름이 낮게 걸려 있었다.
By about five in the afternoon we were already in Misan-ri, Sangnam-myeon, Inje. At 6:25 we put our faces together for a picture in a gravel car park. Behind us, low white cloud hung on every green ridge.
3분 뒤 물가로 내려갔다. 모래톱에 흰 천막이 서 있었고, 구명조끼를 입은 사람들과 튜브를 든 사람들이 물가를 오갔다. 강은 건너편 바위 벼랑을 따라 골짜기 안쪽으로 굽어 들어갔다.
Three minutes later we walked down to the water. A white canopy stood on the sandbank, and people in life jackets and people carrying rubber rings came and went along the edge. The river bent away up the valley beside a rock wall on the far side.
같은 물가, 다음 날 아침The same shore, the next morning
일요일 아침 9시 39분, 같은 물가로 다시 내려갔다. 풀숲 너머로 강이 보였다. 전날 저녁 붐비던 모래톱은 한산했고, 물은 바닥의 모래와 돌이 그대로 비칠 만큼 맑은 초록빛이었다. 건너편으로는 회색 바위 벼랑이 물가를 따라 길게 이어졌다.
At 9:39 on Sunday morning we went back down to the same shore. The river showed through the long grass. The sandbank that had been crowded the evening before was quiet, and the water was a clear green, the sand and stones on the bottom showing straight through. On the far side a grey rock wall ran along the water.

9시 41분, 한 사람이 물가의 큰 바위 위에 올라서서 한 손을 높이 들었다. 2분 뒤에는 옅은 안개가 물 위에 남은 골짜기 쪽, 넓은 모래밭 끝에 작게 보였다. 9시 47분에는 무릎께까지 물에 들어가 카메라를 보고 섰다. 물속에서도 발 둘레의 돌이 보였다.
At 9:41 one of us climbed onto a big rock at the edge and raised a hand high. Two minutes later he was a small figure at the far end of the wide sand, towards the valley where a thin mist still lay on the water. At 9:47 he stood in the river up to his knees, facing the camera, the stones around his feet still visible under the water.

저녁에는 산허리에 걸린 구름을 올려다봤고, 아침에는 발밑의 돌을 내려다봤다. 같은 물가에서 하룻밤 사이 시선이 위에서 아래로 내려왔다. 두 주쯤 전 여름휴가 때는 쌍용계곡에서 한낮을 보냈다.
In the evening we looked up at the cloud on the ridges; in the morning we looked down at the stones under our feet. Same shore, one night apart, our eyes moving from the hills to the riverbed. Two weeks or so earlier, on our summer holiday, we had spent a midday at Ssangyong Valley.
