눈을 밟은 바다Snow where
the sand should be
2013년 1월 20일 일요일, 강원 동해의 묵호항과 망상 바닷가에 다녀왔다. 항구 길가에는 치워 둔 눈이 높게 쌓여 있었고, 망상의 넓은 모래사장은 파도가 닿는 물가 한 줄만 남기고 하얗게 덮여 있었다.
On Sunday, 20 January 2013, we went to Mukho Port and the beach at Mangsang in Donghae, Gangwon-do. Cleared snow stood in high banks along the harbour roads, and the wide sands at Mangsang were white all over, except for one strip at the water’s edge where the waves came in.
그 하얀 해변에 눈사람이 하나 서 있었다. 둘은 눈사람 양쪽에 서서 팔을 뻗어 손을 맞잡았다.
On that white beach stood a single snowman. We stood on either side of it and reached out to hold hands.
육교 위에서On the footbridge
오전 11시, 망상 바닷가 쪽의 보행 육교 위에 섰다. 바로 옆으로 눈 덮인 기와지붕 건물이 있었고, 처마 아래에 ‘DONG HAE GRAND HOTEL’이라는 금빛 글자가 붙어 있었다.
At 11 a.m. we stood on a footbridge on the Mangsang side of the coast. Right beside it was a building with a snow-covered tiled roof, and under the eaves, in gold letters, “DONG HAE GRAND HOTEL”.
난간 너머로 내려다보니 소나무 사이로 철길이 눈에 덮인 채 길게 뻗어 있었다.

묵호항의 눈더미와 어선Snowbanks and boats at Mukho
낮 12시 40분쯤 묵호항에 닿았다. 차창 밖 길가에는 회색빛으로 굳은 눈더미가 소나무 아래까지 길게 쌓여 있었다.
We reached Mukho Port at about 12:40. Outside the car window, banks of snow gone grey and hard ran along the roadside, right up to the foot of the pines.
부두에는 집어등을 줄줄이 단 어선이 묶여 있었고, 둘은 그 앞에 나란히 섰다. 지붕마다 눈이 얹힌 부두 길에는 그물 자루가 쌓여 있었다.
Fishing boats hung with rows of lamp bulbs were moored along the quay, and the two of us stood side by side in front of one. On the quayside path, under roofs still carrying snow, sacks of netting were piled up.
항구를 떠나기 전, 게를 스티로폼 상자에 담아 받았다.Before leaving the port, we had crabs packed into a polystyrene box.
망상, 물가의 모래 한 줄Mangsang, one strip of sand
오후 1시 45분, 망상 해변. 넓은 모래사장이 눈에 덮여 있었고, 파도가 닿는 물가를 따라서만 누런 모래가 한 줄 드러나 있었다. 그 경계 가까이에 병과 캔을 꽂은 눈사람이 하나 서 있었다.
1:45 p.m., Mangsang beach. The broad sands lay under snow; only along the water’s edge, where the waves reached, did a single strip of tawny sand show through. Near that line stood a snowman stuck with a bottle and cans.
한 사람씩 눈사람 옆에 섰고, 몸을 숙여 눈사람 팔 쪽으로 손을 뻗어 보기도 했다. 그러다 둘이 양쪽에 서서 팔을 뻗어 손을 맞잡았고, 눈사람을 뒤에 두고 나란히 얼굴을 넣어 사진을 찍었다.
We took turns standing beside it, and one of us bent down to reach towards its arm. Then we stood on either side and stretched out to hold hands, and took a picture of our two faces with the snowman behind.
눈사람은 사진마다 같은 자리에 서 있었다. 사람만 바뀌어 옆에 섰다.In every picture the snowman stayed in the same place. Only the people beside it changed.
눈에 덮인 모래사장과 물가의 모래 한 줄, 그리고 파도. 그날 망상의 바닷가는 세 겹이었고, 우리는 그 맨 위의 눈을 밟았다.
Snow over the sands, one strip of sand at the edge, then the waves. That day the shore at Mangsang came in three layers, and we walked on the top one.
