Wind at the rail,
Incheon Bridge beyond
At around three in the afternoon on Sunday, 16 June 2013, we stood on the shore at the western edge of Songdo International City in Incheon. The sky was blue, with long streaks of cloud. The wind kept blowing hair across our faces.
On the right of the horizon, the two towers of Incheon Bridge showed thin and pale. The photographs cover a little under fifteen minutes: our two faces pressed together at a rail, each of us standing in turn in front of it, and finally the two of us reflected in a car window.

Against the white rail
With our backs to the white rail on the sea side, we held a phone out in front and pressed our faces together. The one in sunglasses put an arm around the other’s shoulders.
In one frame she turned her head and puckered her lips towards his cheek, and he closed his eyes and smiled.

The black rail and the stone step
On the same stretch of shore was a wooden deck, edged on the sea side by a black iron rail. In front of the rail was a low stone step, and we each climbed onto it in turn. Far off, Incheon Bridge hung on the horizon.

Both pictures were taken on the same stone step, forty-four seconds apart.

Turning from the sea
Turning round, we could see the high-rises of Songdo International City beyond a grassy field and a wide road. Among a tall building with a slanted, cut-off top and towers of glass, cranes were still standing.
On one side the sea and the bridge, on the other a new city: from the same spot, it was only a turn of the head.
The grey rail on the sea wall
At 3:10 we were on a path along the top of a sea wall, about two kilometres to the south-west. A grey rail ran on and on, with white water breaking just below it. Incheon Bridge looked bigger here than it had from the deck.
She leaned on the rail and tilted her head, then lifted one hand high. Beyond the hand was the bridge.

A minute later the two of us showed side by side in the window of a parked silver car, so we took one more picture of that.
The rails changed colour from place to place; beyond each of them was the same bridge.
