삼나무 숲과 산굼부리Two in teal:
cedar woods and Sangumburi
2013년 7월 22일부터 23일, 제주의 첫 이틀. 비자림로의 숲과 산굼부리를 지나 성판악의 저녁까지, 우리의 여름은 초록에서 하늘빛으로 이어졌다.
22–23 July 2013, our first two days in Jeju. From the woods beside Bijarim-ro and Sangumburi to evening at Seongpanak, our summer passed from green to sky.
구름 위에서Above the clouds
첫날 아침 7시가 되기 전, 비행기 창밖으로 구름이 바닥처럼 깔려 있었다. 위로는 짙은 파란 하늘뿐이었다.
Before seven on the first morning, the clouds lay outside the plane window like a floor.
이날은 제주에 내려 서귀포와 협재 쪽을 다녀왔다. 이 편은 이튿날의 숲과 풀숲 길, 저녁 하늘을 따라간다.
That day, once we had landed, took us to Seogwipo and out towards Hyeopjae. This part follows the next day: a wood, grassy paths and an evening sky.

The cedar wood beside Bijarim-ro. A trace of white within the deep green made the quiet feel deeper.
We took turns in front of the same white tree. Different hats, the same top.
산굼부리, 돌담과 풀숲 길Sangumburi: stone walls and grassy paths
한 시간이 채 안 되어 동쪽으로 6킬로미터쯤 떨어진 산굼부리에 있었다. 큰 나무 그늘이 드리운 넓은 길을 지나, 검은 현무암 돌담을 낀 돌계단을 올랐다.
Less than an hour later we were at Sangumburi, about six kilometres to the east. We passed along a broad path shaded by big trees, then climbed stone steps beside a wall of black basalt.
돌담은 구멍이 숭숭 난 검은 돌을 그대로 쌓아 올린 것이었다. 그 위로 하늘은 낮에도 내내 흐렸다.The wall was built of black, pitted stones simply stacked on one another. Above it the sky stayed overcast all through the middle of the day.
초록 풀 사이의 검은 길A dark path through green grass
산굼부리의 낮은 돌담과 여름 풀빛. 흐린 하늘 아래 초록이 오래 이어졌다.

여름의 풀은 아직 초록이었다.
In summer the grass was still green.
성판악, 저녁 구름 아래Seongpanak, under the evening clouds
저녁 6시 반이 넘어 516로의 성판악에 닿았다. ‘성판악 탐방로’ 표지판이 선 곳에서 건물 위 데크로 올라갔다. 숲으로 덮인 둥근 산이 바로 뒤에 솟아 있었다.
After half past six we reached Seongpanak on the 516 road. From where the “Seongpanak Trail” sign stands, we went up onto a deck on top of a building. A rounded, forested hill rose right behind it.
낮 동안 흐렸던 하늘은 어느새 작은 구름 조각들로 바뀌어 있었다. 한쪽은 빈틈없이 덮였고, 그 틈으로 파란 하늘이 났다.
The sky that had been overcast all day had turned into small flakes of cloud. In places they covered it edge to edge; through the gaps, blue showed.
하루 전 아침에는 구름을 내려다보았고, 이날 저녁에는 구름을 올려다보았다.
The morning before, we had looked down on the clouds. That evening, we looked up into them.
