용머리해안Between the layers:
the Yongmeori coast
2013년 7월 24일, 상모리와 용머리해안. 우리의 셋째 날은 섬 남서쪽, 낮은 하늘과 오래된 바위의 결 사이였다.
24 July 2013, Sangmo-ri and Yongmeori. Our third day lay on Jeju’s southwest coast, between low skies and ancient layers of rock.
숲과 분화구를 걸은 앞의 이틀은 청록 두 벌, 삼나무 숲과 산굼부리에 있다.

절벽 끝을 따라가는 길A path along the cliff edge
제주 올레 10코스가 지나는 상모리 해안. 풀로 덮인 절벽 끝을 따라 흙길이 굽어 돌고, 그 아래 검은 바위에는 파도가 하얗게 부서진다. 길을 걷는 사람들이 멀리 작게 보였다.

나무 난간을 두른 전망 자리에는 돌 바닥과 나무 벤치가 있었다. 하늘은 낮게 흐렸고, 바다 건너는 희미했다.
An overcast afternoon on Olle Route 10 at Sangmo-ri. Between the low sky and sea, the cliffs felt deeper still.
줄무늬 바위, 벌집 바위Striped rock, honeycomb rock
용머리해안의 절벽은 얇은 층이 가로로 수없이 겹쳐 쌓인 바위다. 줄무늬가 물결처럼 휘기도 하고, 군데군데 벌집처럼 구멍이 숭숭 뚫려 있기도 하다.
The cliffs of the Yongmeori coast are made of countless thin layers of rock laid flat one on another. In places the stripes bend like waves; in others the rock is pitted with holes like a honeycomb. Square blocks that had broken away lay piled at the foot of the cliff.

안으로 들어갈수록 양쪽 절벽이 높아졌다. 발밑 바위 틈에는 게 한 마리가 숨어 있었다.
Green seawater runs in and out of a narrow channel between the rocks, and the way continues over the flat rock beside it. The further in we went, the higher the cliffs rose on either side. In a crack at our feet a crab was hiding.
용머리해안의 겹겹이 굽은 결. 우리의 짧은 여름 하루 옆으로, 훨씬 긴 시간이 드러나는 곳이었다.
