우음도The field that was
an island: Ueumdo
9 October 2013, Ueumdo. Between the Songsan Greencity Skydeck and autumn fields, the island’s name stayed with us as a sense of open space.

A marker stone and a horizon
A dark stone carved with ‘Ueumdo’ looked out from the weeds, with pink and white cosmos flowering beside it. Beyond, the yellowing grass ran flat until, very far off, it ended at a hazy line of high-rises.
The name still ends in do, ‘island’, but the reclamation around Sihwa Lake has joined it to the mainland.

Autumn opened out from the Songsan Greencity Skydeck. Beyond the woods, the wide field gave new space to the name of an island.
On the deck at the top, golden fields ran beyond the woods to the horizon, with a glint of water at one end.

A track through the golden grass
The Ueumdo fields lay between yellow and red. For us, that autumn belongs more to the colours of low grass than to the sky.
