흰 파도가 남은 겨울 바다
Winter in white surf
2013년 12월 21일, 망상의 해 질 무렵. 낮은 구름 아래 유난히 흰 파도, 그리고 강릉 초당동의 두부 저녁. 우리 겨울의 짙은 빛과 따뜻한 끝.
21 December 2013, dusk at Mangsang. White surf beneath low cloud, then a tofu supper in Chodang-dong, Gangneung. Dark winter light, and a warm ending for us.
고개를 넘는 길Over the mountains
평창 진부 근처를 지날 때 하늘은 아직 새파랬다. 응달에는 눈이 남아 있었고, 표지판 위로 ‘진부’라는 글자가 지나갔다. 바다에 닿은 건 그로부터 두 시간쯤 뒤였다.
Passing near Jinbu in Pyeongchang, the sky was still a hard blue. Snow lingered in the shade, and the word ‘Jinbu’ slid past on a sign overhead. We reached the sea about two hours later.
흐린 날의 파도Waves on a grey day
해가 지기 직전이었지만 구름이 낮게 덮여 해는 보이지 않았다. 대신 파도가 컸다. 겹겹이 밀려와 물가 가득 하얗게 부서졌다.
해 질 무렵의 망상. 낮은 구름 아래 파도의 흰빛이 유난히 선명했다. 우리 곁의 겨울은 어둡기만 한 색은 아니었다.
It was just before sunset, but low cloud covered the sky and the sun never showed. The waves made up for it: they came in rank after rank and broke white all along the shore.
Mangsang at dusk. Beneath low cloud, the surf was startlingly white. Winter beside us was not only a dark colour.

바라보는 쪽, 돌아보는 쪽Looking away, looking back
모래사장은 왼쪽으로 길게 휘어져 산 능선 아래까지 이어졌다.
The beach curved away to the left as far as the foot of the ridges.
구름은 더 어두워졌고, 파도는 그대로 하얬다.
The cloud had grown darker; the waves were as white as ever.
초당에서 두부 한 상A tofu supper in Chodang
바다를 떠나 북쪽으로 한 시간쯤 올라가, 강릉 초당동에서 저녁을 먹었다. 나무 식탁에 큼직하게 썬 두부와 김치, 뚝배기 순두부찌개가 놓였다.
Leaving the sea, we drove north for about an hour and ate in Chodang-dong, Gangneung. On a wooden table: thick slices of tofu with kimchi, and soft-tofu stew in a stone pot.
저녁 식탁에는 하얀 두부가 놓였다.
