A Merlion in the morning, a Merlion at night
The 37-metre Merlion we looked up at on Sentosa, and the 8.6-metre original spouting water at the river mouth. We met both on the same day.

Singapore · 4–6 May 2014
Sentosa → Marina Bay → Singapore River
→ Changi Airport
This was our last full day in Singapore: Sentosa in the morning, Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay in the afternoon, the Singapore River after dark. The next day took us past kaya toast and a block of HDB flats, then by MRT to Changi Airport. It follows part 1, the caricature day on Sentosa, and part 2, Marina Bay from the Singapore Flyer.
A 37-metre Merlion
and a mosaic walk
Breakfast was kaya toast at Toast Box. At Imbiah, in the middle of Sentosa, stood the 37-metre Merlion built in 1995; steps and flowerbeds ran down from beneath its lion head, and behind it the Merlion Walk wound along like a stream, covered in coloured tile mosaic.
Both the Merlion and the mosaic walk closed in October 2019 and were demolished; the site is now Sensoryscape, a walkway linking the north of the island to the beaches in the south. It was still morning, the shadows still long.

A beach facing the southern tip
We rode the beach shuttle tram that loops the island down to Palawan Beach on the south side. Across a shallow lagoon, two wooden lookout towers stand on a small islet; reached by a suspension bridge, it carries a sign marking the southernmost point of continental Asia.
At midday the sand was blindingly white and the palm shade was short. Not an hour for taking sunglasses off.

In the afternoon we crossed to Marina Bay Sands. Three leaning towers holding up one ship-shaped roof are dizziest seen from directly below. Inside The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands beneath, an indoor canal runs through the mall, with small sampan boats going up and down.
On the way to Gardens by the Bay, the underground passage towards Bayfront station is lined with Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #915 (1999), a long run of primary-coloured arcs and bands.

Steel trees and
cool glass domes
Gardens by the Bay opened in 2012. The OCBC Skyway threads between Supertrees 25 to 50 metres tall, and towards the sea stand two glass conservatories: the Flower Dome, home to Mediterranean and dry-climate flowers and baobabs, and the Cloud Forest, a cool tropical mountain forest brought indoors, where a waterfall drops 35 metres as you walk in.
Both domes are kept at around twenty degrees, so one door changes the season. On the bridge over the lake on the way out we could see the Singapore Flyer we had ridden two nights before.

Down the river
to the original
After dark we took a bumboat on the Singapore River. From the lights of Clarke Quay it passes the low shophouses along the bank, the Fullerton Hotel, built in 1928 as the General Post Office, and the blue-lit Esplanade Bridge, to Merlion Park at the river mouth, where the original 8.6-metre Merlion of 1972 spouts water towards the bay.
The boat carried on into Marina Bay, past Marina Bay Sands, the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum and the durian-skinned Esplanade, and back. Far smaller than the Merlion we had looked up at that morning, but this is the one that spouts water.

Off the boat, we found a place on the waterfront steps in front of Marina Bay Sands, the city’s towers straight across the water. The light-and-water show of those years, Wonder Full, threw light onto a screen of mist. Today Spectra runs free in the same spot.

카야 토스트, HDB,
Kaya toast, HDB flats
and Changi
The first meal of our last day was at Ya Kun Kaya Toast: thin, crisp toast filled with kaya coconut jam and cold butter, with strong coffee, the Singapore breakfast. Mango shaved ice and sushi filled the afternoon, and before the airport we walked through a block of HDB flats, the public housing eight in ten Singaporeans live in, each block with its big number and a ground floor left open for neighbours to share.
Then the MRT to Changi Airport: a single ticket to CG2 Changi Airport cost S$2.40 plus a S$0.10 deposit. The runway turned blue at dusk beyond the terminal glass, and we flew home on a night flight.

The Merlion we looked up at that morning is gone now;
the one we passed that night is still pouring water into the bay.
