멀리 떠나지 않은 석 달. 대신 우리는 창 쪽 자리를 골랐고, 자리마다 빛이 달랐다.Three months without going far. We picked the seat by the window instead, and every window let in a different light.

2012년 겨울에는 먼 길을 나서지 않았다. 퇴근 뒤 분당 정자동의 저녁, 일요일 오후 판교 백현동의 파이 가게, 금요일 밤의 수원역, 동탄 끝 언덕의 높은 유리창, 그리고 봄이 오기 직전 서울로 올라간 하루.
We didn’t travel far in the winter of 2012. Weeknight dinners in Jeongja-dong after work, a Sunday afternoon at a pie café in Baekhyeon-dong, Pangyo, a Friday night by Suwon Station, tall windows on a hill at the edge of Dongtan, and one day up in Seoul just before spring.
돌아보니 고른 자리마다 창이 있었다. 그 자리들만 모아 놓으면, 한 계절이 창문 몇 장으로 남는다.
Looking back, every seat we chose had a window. Put those seats together and a whole season comes down to a handful of windows.

평일의 저녁Jeongja-dong,
weeknight evenings
1월의 평일 저녁은 정자동에서 시작됐다. 4일은 새해 첫 주의 수요일, 19일은 중식당 홀리차우의 칸막이 자리. 정자동 카페 골목은 저녁이 되면 길보다 창 안쪽이 더 밝았다.
January weeknights began in Jeongja-dong. The 4th was the Wednesday of the new year’s first week; the 19th, a booth at the Chinese restaurant Holly Chow. After dark the café streets of Jeongja-dong were brighter inside the windows than out on the pavement.
그 사이 11일 밤에는 라넌큘러스 꽃다발과 격자무늬 애플파이가 있었다. 1월에 보는 봄꽃은 조금 이르게 도착한 소식 같다.
On the night of the 11th, in between, there were ranunculus and a lattice-topped apple pie. Spring flowers in January always feel like news that arrived a little early.

판교역에서 걸어갈 만한 거리의 백현동 카페거리. 그때 그 골목에는 영국풍 파이 가게 레트로나파이가 있었다. 동그란 창이 줄지어 뚫린 흰 벽, 벽돌 모퉁이의 비틀스 포스터, 하트 라테와 머랭을 올린 초콜릿 파이.
The café street of Baekhyeon-dong, an easy walk from Pangyo Station. Back then the lane had Retrona Pie, an English-style pie shop: a white wall pierced with rows of round windows, a Beatles poster on a brick corner, a heart in the latte and a chocolate pie under meringue.
겨울 해는 낮게 들어와서 오래 머물렀다. 오후 세 시가 되기 전부터 다섯 시 오십 분이 넘도록 그 자리에 있었다. 그 사이 창으로 드는 빛은 하얗다가 노랗다가, 끝에는 샹들리에 불빛만 남았다.
The winter sun came in low and stayed. We were there from before three until past ten to six. In between, the light through the glass went from white to gold, and by the end only the chandelier was left.

수원역 앞은 금요일 밤이면 늘 붐볐다. 저녁 여덟 시 반이 넘어 역 근처에서 늦은 저녁을 먹고, 사람으로 꽉 찬 카페로 자리를 옮겼다. 한 주가 끝나는 밤의 소란은 그 자체로 조금 들뜬 공기였다.
The streets in front of Suwon Station were always crowded on a Friday night. After half past eight we had a late dinner near the station, then moved to a café packed to the walls. The noise of a week ending was its own kind of lift.

동탄에서 돈가스로 저녁을 먹고, 신도시가 끝나는 언덕의 보나카바로 갔다. 주소로는 오산시 외삼미동이지만 동탄과 맞닿은 곳, 정원을 둔 단독 건물의 이탈리안 레스토랑 겸 카페다. 층고가 높은 홀 가운데로 돌을 쌓은 기둥이 지붕까지 올라가고, 2층 난간에 서면 아래층 테이블이 내려다보인다.
After a pork-cutlet dinner in Dongtan we drove to Bona Kava, on the hill where the new town ends. Its address says Oesammi-dong, Osan, but it sits right against Dongtan: an Italian restaurant and café in its own building with a garden. A column of stacked stone rises through the tall hall to the roof, and from the upstairs rail you look down on the tables below.
밤 아홉 시가 넘자 큰 유리창 너머로 동탄의 아파트 불빛과 아직 치우지 않은 크리스마스트리가 보였다. 촛불 컵 하나, 휘핑크림을 높이 올린 음료 두 잔. 차로 가야 하는 곳이고, 주차장은 넓다.
Past nine, the big windows held the lights of Dongtan’s apartment towers and a Christmas tree nobody had taken down yet. One candle cup, two drinks piled high with whipped cream. You need a car to get there; the car park is big.

3월은 화이트데이로 시작해 서울로 끝났다. 13일 밤의 곰 쿠키 치즈케이크, 14일의 장미 꽃 상자. 17일에는 Celine이 머리를 밝은 갈색으로 물들였고, 오후 3시 44분의 햇빛이 그 색을 먼저 알아봤다. 22일 밤은 엔제리너스의 딸기 음료와 레몬 에이드.
March opened with White Day and ended in Seoul: a cheesecake with a bear cookie on the night of the 13th, a box of roses on the 14th. On the 17th Celine had her hair dyed a light brown, and the 3:44 sun noticed the colour first. The night of the 22nd was a strawberry drink and a lemonade at Angel-in-us.
24일 토요일에는 광역버스로 서울에 올라가, 저녁은 소공동 롯데호텔 서울의 뷔페 라세느. 하늘이 유난히 파랗던 날이었다.
On Saturday the 24th we took the express bus up to Seoul and had dinner at La Seine, the buffet at Lotte Hotel Seoul in Sogong-dong. The sky was unusually blue that day.
멀리 가지 않은 겨울이었다.
창 쪽 자리가 비어 있으면, 그걸로 충분했다.It was a winter that didn’t go far.
A free seat by the window was enough.
