가을 제주 첫날Sea-glass water to silver grass: our first autumn day in Jeju
2014년 10월 9일, 한글날. 새벽 다섯 시 사십 분 김포공항에서 시작한 하루는 제주 동쪽 바다와 섭지코지, 교래 곶자왈의 에코랜드를 거쳐 표선에서 끝났다.9 October 2014, Hangul Day. The day began at Gimpo Airport at 5:40 in the morning and ran through the beaches of eastern Jeju, the Seopjikoji headland and the Gyorae forest at Ecoland, ending in Pyoseon.
동쪽 바다The east-side sea
제주시 조천읍 함덕에서 구좌읍 김녕, 월정리까지. 제주 북동쪽 해안에 차례로 놓인 해변들이다. 흰 모래 위로 물빛이 얕은 곳은 연한 옥빛, 먼 곳은 짙은 남색이었다.
From Hamdeok in Jocheon to Gimnyeong and Woljeong in Gujwa: a string of beaches along the north-east coast of Jeju. Over white sand the shallows were pale jade, the far water deep navy.
10월의 해변에는 해수욕객 대신 바람이 있었다. 월정리는 파도 좋은 날 서퍼들이 모이는 바다다.
In October the beaches had wind instead of swimmers. Woljeong is where surfers gather when the waves are good.
섭지코지의 억새Silver grass at Seopjikoji
점심은 성산읍 온평리 바닷가에서. 그리고 섭지코지. 성산읍 고성리에서 바다 쪽으로 길게 뻗은 곶으로, 바다 건너 성산일출봉이 가깝다.
Lunch by the sea at Onpyeong, then Seopjikoji: a long headland reaching out from Goseong-ri in Seongsan, with Seongsan Ilchulbong just across the water.
10월의 언덕은 억새가 한창이었다. 곶 끝, 등대가 있는 언덕까지 길이 이어진다.
In October the slopes were thick with silver grass. A path runs to the end of the headland and the hill with the lighthouse.

교래 곶자왈, 에코랜드Gyorae Gotjawal: Ecoland
제주시 조천읍 교래리의 곶자왈을 작은 기차로 도는 테마파크. 곶자왈은 용암 바위 위에 자란 숲을 부르는 제주 말이고, 교래 곶자왈은 북방계와 남방계 식물이 함께 자라는 숲이다.
A theme park where a small train loops through the Gyorae gotjawal in Jocheon. Gotjawal is the Jeju word for forest grown over lava rock; this one is home to both northern and southern plants.
기차는 4.5km를 돌며 호수와 풍차가 있는 레이크사이드역 같은 간이역에 선다. 역 사이로는 붉은 송이 흙길이 숲 안으로 나 있다.
The train runs 4.5 km and stops at small stations such as Lakeside, with its pond and windmill. Between the stations, paths of red volcanic scoria lead into the trees.
표선의 밤Night in Pyoseon
해 질 무렵 남쪽 표선으로. 저녁은 표선에서 회와 지리, 밤 아홉 시 무렵엔 해비치의 유리 지붕 아래.
Towards Pyoseon on the south coast as the sun went down. Dinner in Pyoseon, raw fish and a clear fish soup; around nine, under the glass roof at Haevichi.
하루 전인 10월 8일 밤에는 개기월식이 있었다. 이튿날의 달은 아직 둥글었다.
The night before, 8 October, there had been a total lunar eclipse. A night later, the moon was still full.
