Mountain mist, a night by the pond
The first of three days in Gyeongju and Pohang: Bulguksa and Seokguram by day, Bomun Lake at dusk, and Donggung Palace, Wolji Pond and Cheomseongdae by night.
불국사Bulguksa Temple
We stopped first at our hotel by Bomun Lake, then had a late lunch at a Korean set-meal restaurant on the road to Bulguksa.
Bulguksa sits on the western slopes of Mount Tohamsan. Rebuilt in 751 by the Silla minister Kim Dae-seong into roughly the shape it has today, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Seokguram in 1995. The stone stairways up to Jahamun Gate, Cheongungyo and Baegungyo, are National Treasures.
A summer afternoon under low cloud.

Seokguram in the mist
About three kilometres further up Tohamsan from Bulguksa is Seokguram, the grotto of a seated Buddha facing the East Sea. Inside, it can only be seen through a glass wall.
The same mountain, but up here we were inside the mist.

Coming down the mountain, the mist cleared quickly.

Evening at Bomun Lake
The Bomun Lake resort area is where much of Gyeongju stays. The old city’s sites are about fifteen minutes away by car, so you can see Bulguksa by day, come back in the evening and head out again at night.
The hills across the lake went dark first.

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond
The site of a Silla royal secondary palace and its pond. Wolji was dug in 674; known for centuries as Anapji, it got its old name back in 2011. It stays open until 10 p.m., and the lights come on after sunset.

The water was so still that the night above and below was the same.
Cheomseongdae and the lotus fields
A little over 700 metres west of Wolji Pond. Cheomseongdae is an observatory said to have been built in the seventh century under Queen Seondeok of Silla. In the historic grounds to its east, lotuses bloom every summer.

The next day, we went down to the sea.
