긴 휴가 앞뒤로 남은 여름의 주말들. 멀리 가지 않아도 창밖은 한여름이었다.The summer weekends either side of a long holiday. We didn’t go far, and still the window was full of midsummer.

8월 5일부터 나흘은 바다와 계곡에 있었다. 이 글은 그 앞뒤의 이야기다. 짐을 싸지 않은 토요일들, 가까운 동네의 창가 자리, 기념일 아침의 접시 하나.
From 5 August we spent four days by the sea and in the valleys. This is about the days either side of that: Saturdays without a suitcase, window seats close to home, one plate on the morning of an anniversary.
여름은 그런 날들에 더 오래 머문다. 어디에 다녀왔는지보다, 어느 창가에 앉아 있었는지로 기억되는 계절.
Summer lingers longest in days like those, a season remembered less by where we went than by which window we sat beside.
휴가 전날,
두 번의 창가The day before the holiday,
two windows
휴가를 하루 앞둔 토요일. 점심 무렵엔 동탄에서, 오후 다섯 시엔 다른 카페의 창가에서 보냈다.
The Saturday before the holiday. Around lunchtime we were in Dongtan; at five in the afternoon, at the window of another café.
8월 초의 구름은 높고 무거웠다. 빛은 그 틈으로만 왔다.
Early-August clouds sat high and heavy. The light only came through the gaps.
다음 날, 우리는 서해로 떠났다.The next day we left for the west coast.

휴가에서 돌아온 다음 토요일, 동탄 일블루. 동탄1신도시 센트럴파크 옆, 파스타와 피자를 내는 작은 레스토랑이다.
The Saturday after we got back: Il Blu in Dongtan, a small pasta-and-pizza restaurant beside Central Park in the first Dongtan new town.
열두 시 오십 분부터 한 시 반이 넘도록, 창밖의 초록이 실내까지 번져 들어오던 한낮이었다.
From ten to one until well past half past, it was the middle of the day, and the green outside seemed to spill in through the glass.
일블루는 지금도 같은 자리, 경기 화성시 동탄시범한빛길에 있다.Il Blu is still in the same place, on Dongtansibeomhanbit-gil in Hwaseong.
처음 만난 날로부터
꼭 2년Two years to the day
since we met
2010년 8월 26일에 처음 만났다. 2년 뒤 같은 날은 일요일이었다.
We first met on 26 August 2010. Two years later the date fell on a Sunday.
아침 열 시 반, 기념일은 쿠키 두 장과 쪽지 한 장만큼의 크기였고, 그걸로 충분했다.
At half past ten that morning the anniversary was the size of two cookies and a note, and that was enough.

2012년의 추분은 9월 22일 토요일이었다. 낮과 밤의 길이가 같아지는 날, 오후 다섯 시에도 빙수는 아직 여름 메뉴였다.
In 2012 the autumn equinox fell on Saturday 22 September. On the day when day and night are the same length, at five in the afternoon, shaved ice was still on the summer menu.
여름은 그렇게, 한 숟가락씩 줄어들었다.
That was how summer went, one spoonful at a time.
멀리 가지 않은 주말에도
창밖은 늘 초록이었다.Even on the weekends we didn’t go far,
the window was always green.
