an afternoon on the lake
함께한 지 200일째부터 275일째까지, 2011년 5월에서 7월. 200일의 촛불, 정동의 저녁, 백운호수, 생일의 촛불, 6월의 수국, 그리고 밤의 딸기빙수. 봄이 여름으로 넘어가던 석 달.Days 200 to 275 of us: May to July 2011. Candles for our 200th day, an evening in Jeong-dong, Baegun Lake, birthday candles, June hydrangeas, and a strawberry bingsu late at night. Three months in which spring turned into summer.

200일째 밤의 촛불Candles on our 200th night
5월 8일 일요일, 함께한 지 200일째 되던 밤. 낮은 초여름이었지만, 밤바람은 아직 봄이었다.
Sunday, 8 May: the night of our 200th day together. The days were already early summer; the night air was still spring.
성당 마당을 지나 극장으로Through the cathedral yard to the theatre
5월 18일 수요일 저녁, 서울 정동. 덕수궁 돌담 뒤편, 대한성공회 서울주교좌성당의 붉은 벽돌과 한식 기와 위로 해가 지고 있었다.
Wednesday evening, 18 May, in Jeong-dong, Seoul. Behind the stone wall of Deoksugung Palace, the sun was going down over the red brick and Korean roof tiles of the Anglican Cathedral.
1922년에 짓기 시작해 1926년 미완성인 채 축성했고, 70년 가까이 지나 영국에서 찾은 원설계도대로 1996년에야 완성한 로마네스크 성당이다. 그날 저녁 8시, 성당 옆 세실극장에서 뮤지컬 〈비밥〉을 봤다.
Begun in 1922 and consecrated unfinished in 1926, it was only completed in 1996, nearly seventy years later, from the original plans found in England. At eight that evening, we saw the musical Bibap at the Cecil Theatre next to the cathedral.
오후 다섯 시의 물 위On the water at five in the afternoon
나흘 뒤 일요일, 경기 의왕의 백운호수. 1953년 농업용 저수지로 만든 호수를 청계산과 백운산, 모락산이 둘러싼다. 그날은 둘이서 노 젓는 보트를 빌렸다.
Four days later, a Sunday, at Baegun Lake in Uiwang, Gyeonggi. Built in 1953 as a farm reservoir, the lake sits in a ring of mountains: Cheonggyesan, Baegunsan and Moraksan. That day, the two of us rented a rowing boat.
물 위에서는 바람이 먼저 여름이었다.
Out on the water, the wind reached summer first.
또 한 번의 촛불Candles once more
5월 27일 금요일, Ethan의 생일. 저녁은 분당 정자동에서 먹고, 밤 열 시 반이 넘어 다시 촛불을 켰다. 3주 사이 두 번째 촛불이었다.
Friday, 27 May: Ethan’s birthday. Dinner in Jeongja-dong, Bundang; then, after half past ten at night, candles again. The second set of candles in three weeks.
6월은 수국의 달June is the month of hydrangeas
6월 셋째 토요일 밤, 동탄의 카페 Think. 6월은 수국이 피기 시작하는 달이다. 그날 테이블 위의 수국은 아직 초록이었다.
The third Saturday night of June, at Think, a café in Dongtan. June is when hydrangeas begin to bloom; the ones on our table that night were still green.
여름 쪽으로Towards summer
6월 마지막 일요일 오후, 구름이 높았다. 7월 둘째 토요일, 동탄.
The last Sunday afternoon of June, with clouds high overhead. The second Saturday of July, in Dongtan.
밤 열 시의 딸기빙수Strawberry bingsu at ten at night
7월 22일 금요일 밤, 수원 영통의 투썸플레이스. 소프트아이스크림을 얹은 딸기빙수 한 그릇. 함께한 지 275일째였다.
Friday night, 22 July, at A Twosome Place in Yeongtong, Suwon: one bowl of strawberry bingsu topped with soft-serve. It was our 275th day.
