A year in,
flowers in our arms
Early August to mid-September 2011. Midday at Everland, an afternoon in Samcheong-dong, a bouquet on the night that marked exactly a year since we first met, number candles on a birthday eve, a Chuseok walk, then a mint bridesmaid dress and a night at Jamwon Hangang Park.
The first Friday of August, Everland
Friday, 5 August: Everland in Yongin, Gyeonggi. It opened in 1976 as Yongin Farmland and took its present name in 1996. A weekday in the middle of the summer holidays.
Outside the shade it was high summer.

Samcheong-dong through the window
Dorothy.
Saturday afternoon, 20 August, in Samcheong-dong, Seoul: the neighbourhood that climbs north along the eastern wall of Gyeongbokgung Palace. A restaurant called Cook’n Heim with window seats, and Dorothy, a pie shop in the lane.
The street trees outside the window were still in full summer green.

Exactly a year since we first met
We first met on 26 August 2010. Exactly a year later, on a Friday night in Jeongja-dong, Bundang. The bouquet barely fit in our arms.
Back then only the Bundang Line stopped at Jeongja. The Shinbundang Line opened two months later, on 28 October 2011.

8Number candles: 2 and 8
The last night of August. The next day was Celine’s birthday. Friends gathered, a strawberry charlotte cake arrived, and two number candles were lit.
The last night of summer; the first candles of twenty-eight.

The cosmos got there first
12 September, Chuseok that year. Along the path beside a stream between apartment blocks, the cosmos had arrived ahead of us. Middays were still summer, but the evening light had already tilted towards autumn.

The next evening, on a roadside café terrace. For a while after sunset, the sky turned blue.
A day in a mint dress
Saturday, 17 September: a friend’s wedding photo shoot. Celine was among the bridesmaids, in mint.

Lights across the river
Late that night, at Jamwon Hangang Park in Seoul. Beyond the floating restaurant Fradia, N Seoul Tower on Namsan stood lit in red, and the lights of the north bank ran long across the water.

2010. 8. 26 — 2011. 8. 26
And so the summer of our first year went by.
