동백 핀 오동도까지From a snowy Seollal to the camellias of Odongdo
2015년 2월 19일 설날부터 이튿날까지. 장수의 설날 아침, 순천만의 해넘이, 여수 돌산공원의 밤, 그리고 오동도의 동백 숲.Seollal, 19 February 2015, and the day after: New Year’s morning in Jangsu, sunset over Suncheon Bay, a night at Dolsan Park in Yeosu, and the camellia woods of Odongdo.
설날 아침, 장수Seollal morning in Jangsu
2015년 설날은 2월 19일 목요일이었다. 그해 설 아침은 전북 장수, 차례상 앞에서 시작했다.
Seollal fell on Thursday 19 February in 2015. That year our New Year’s morning began in Jangsu, North Jeolla, in front of the ancestral rites table.
며칠 전 내린 눈이 산골 마당과 장독대 위에 남아 있었다. 공기는 차고, 하늘은 끝까지 맑았다.
Snow from a few days before still lay on the yards and the rows of crocks in the hills. The air was cold and the sky clear all the way to the ridges.

오후 늦게 순천만습지에 닿았다. 2월의 갈대는 다 마른 금빛이었고, 바닷바람이 차서 목도리를 턱 끝까지 올렸다.
Late in the afternoon we reached Suncheon Bay Wetland. In February the reeds are dry and gold, and the sea wind was cold enough to pull our scarves up to the chin.
갈대밭 데크길 끝 산길을 오르면 용산전망대다. 해는 S자로 굽은 물길 끝, 섬들 사이로 졌다.
At the end of the boardwalk through the reeds, a hill path climbs to Yongsan Observatory. The sun went down at the far end of the curving channel, between the islands.

돌산공원에서 내려다본 밤The night from Dolsan Park
밤에는 여수로 내려왔다. 돌산대교를 건너자마자 있는 돌산공원에 오르면 다리와 여수항이 한눈에 내려다보인다.
At night we came down to Yeosu. Right across Dolsan Bridge, Dolsan Park looks down over the bridge and Yeosu harbour.
다리의 불빛은 쉬지 않고 색을 바꿨고, 공원 언덕의 나무들도 불빛을 입고 있었다. 설날 밤, 바닷바람은 낮보다 한결 순했다.
The bridge lights kept changing colour, and the trees on the park hill were wrapped in lights too. On Seollal night the sea wind was gentler than in the afternoon.
돌산공원 여수시 돌산읍 우두리 산 1, 연중 개방·무료 주차. 돌산대교 조명은 여러 프로그램으로 색을 바꾸며, 공원 뷰포인트에서 다리와 장군도, 이순신광장 쪽 야경이 보인다(여수관광문화 안내).
Dolsan Park San 1, Udu-ri, Dolsan-eup, Yeosu; open all year with free parking. The bridge lighting runs through several colour programmes, and the viewpoint takes in the bridge, Janggundo islet and the lights around Yi Sun-sin Square (Yeosu tourism guide).
이튿날, 오동도의 동백 숲The next day: the camellia woods of Odongdo
이튿날 낮에는 오동도에 들어갔다. 섬은 온통 동백나무 숲이고, 그 아래로 나무 데크길이 이어진다.
The next afternoon we crossed to Odongdo. The island is one wood of camellia trees, with wooden paths running beneath them.
2월 중순의 동백은 이제 막 피기 시작해, 짙은 잎 사이로 드문드문 붉었다. 숲 그늘 아래는 한낮에도 서늘했다.
In mid-February the camellias were only just opening, a scattering of red among the dark leaves. Under the trees it stayed cool even at midday.

눈이 남은 설날 아침에서 동백이 피기 시작한 오후까지. 하루 반 사이에 계절이 한 칸 남쪽으로 옮겨 갔다.
From a Seollal morning with snow still on the ground to an afternoon of first camellias: in a day and a half, the season moved one step south.
